On
Memorial Day 1942, Sid visited home for the last time for two years, this time
as a Marine of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
His little brother, John, donned his Boy Scout uniform for the occasion and
Sid’s older sister, Katharine, wanted photos with Sid in his dress blues

friend Eugene Sledge came to say goodbye. A year younger, Eugene couldn’t
wait to follow in Sid’s footsteps. But neither boy could imagine what
a journey it would be. After an emotional farewell, Sid and his buddies in the
No. 4 gun squad, Tatum, Lucas, Ransom, and Doyle, with W.O. as an ammo carrier,
went by troop train to San Francisco then by rusty steamer into the Pacific.
After loading for combat in New Zealand and invasion practice in Fiji, Sid and
his comrades received their mission; the Japanese had nearly finished building
an airfield on the island of Guadalcanal that threatened the supply lines to
